The American Red Cross, facing a critical shortage of type O blood, will be hosting a blood drive this Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th 11:000am – 3:00pm at the Omni Charlottesville Hotel Ballroom. Red Cross spokesperson, Bernadette Jay joins Wendy to talk about the urgent need, and how patient care can be directly impacted.

Nathan Mitchell – Northam Blocks Opioid Bill

Just this week, Governor Ralph Northam vetoed VA House Bill 2528, which would have allowed prosecutors to charge drug dealers with second degree murder if the drugs they provide directly contribute to the death of the user. Long sought by local prosecutors, the bill had been supported by Attorney General Mark Herring as a way to stem the tide of Opioid deaths in Virginia. Nathan Mitchell, Community Outreach & Advocacy Coordinator for The McShin Foundation, joins Wendy to respond to the Governor’s action.

Tricia Johnson – Fluvanna Old Farm Day

Fluvanna County’s premier community event, the 23rd annual Old Farm Day is today, May 4th, at Pleasant Grove, 1730 Thomas Jefferson Parkway, in Palmyra. This year’s event features live music, food, pony rides, a petting zoo, HUGE farm equipment; lots of artists and craftspeople, heritage crafters, local businesses and non-profits. New this year, a Tasting Garden! Thistle Gate, Cunningham Creek, James River Brewery and Castle Hill Cider will be there. Plus, a preview of the Farm Heritage Museum. So much cool stuff! The 2019 ReadyKids Community Breakfast is Monday, April 15th, from 8-9:30 am at The Omni Hotel in downtown Charlottesville. The annual breakfast increases awareness of the needs of children and families in our community by bringing together over 200 guests from local government, school boards, leaders of other non-profits, workers from city and county agencies, and the community at large. WINA’s Jay James has Emcee honors, and this year’s keynote speaker is clinical psychologist Meg Jay. Kristin Sancken, MSW, Communications Officer for ReadyKids, joins Wendy to talk about the ReadyKids program, and to preview the event.
