We have talked many times about the challenges veterans face with maintaining their mental health after combat. But what if we can address possible mental health challenges before the military member even leaves the service?  Can we, and should we, better train our military to handle the mental strains of combat before they go to work?  We speak with former Air Force captain Patricia Capps, legislative director for the Central VA chapter of the MOAA, about the creation of a Behavioral Health Corps and what that would mean for military members and veterans.

Green Dogs Unleashed is a non-profit organization committed to rescuing animals in need, rehabilitating them and professionally training them to become Therapy dogs and then placing them in homes to give back to the community, They focus on the rescue, rehabilitation and training of special needs animals to work with special needs humans. All of their animals are currently trained and rehabilitated at Unleashed Canine Training Academy, in Troy, Virginia.

Erika Proctor joins Wendy Edwards to talk about the rescue of dogs lost and abandoned as a result of the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.

Brooke Anderson – Suicide Prevention – Out of the Darkness Walk

September is suicide prevention month, in the United States, a person dies by suicide every 13.3 minutes, claiming more than 39,500 lives each year. It is estimated that an attempt is made every minute, with close to one million people attempting suicide annually. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. among adults 18-65, the second leading cause of death among teens and young adults, and individuals ages 65 and older account for 16 percent of all suicide deaths. This is a public health issue that does not discriminate by age, gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic status.

Brooke Anderson of the Virginia chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention joins Wendy Edwards to talk about suicide prevention and the Greater Augusta Out of the Darkness Walk coming up on October, 21st in Staunton’s Gypsy Hill Park.
