CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WINA) — Turnout was good at Thursday night’s meeting for both information and community feedback regarding fights and other problems at Charlottesville High School.
Attendees were first given information on immediate changes at CHS and possibilities for the future. They were then broken into groups where they provided feedback to facilitators and returned to give a summary of their discussions.
A frequent issue was poor communication.
“We need the school and the district in general to be more transparent,” said one group’s speaker.
“We’ve got parents who don’t even know what was going on and what we’re trying to address, so we need more clarification,” said another.
One group’s report drew loud applause.
“There really was a lack of trust, this sense that it was almost gaslighting. People were just glossing over the reality of what was really going on and people just really want the real deal.”
Superintendent Dr. Royal Gurley defended information that parents have received as the meeting was wrapping up.
“I will tell you that the information that you get here is factual,” he said, “and there has never been a moment where we have hidden a detail.”
No details were given but administrators say they hope to have more open discussions in the future.
