Rick Britton

Today Civil War historian Rick Britton talks about the REAL end of the Civil War (it didn’t come to an end at Appomattox, Va., on April 9, 1865):

1) Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered in North Carolina on April 26.

2) Confederate General Richard Taylor surrendered in Alabama on May 4.

3) C.S.A. President Jefferson Davis was captured in Georgia on May 10.

4) Confederate General Jeff Thompson surrendered in Arkansas on May 11.

5) Last battle–a Confederate victory–was fought at Palmito Ranch, Texas, on May 12 & 13.

6) C.S.S. Shenandoah–a Confederate commerce raider–continued fighting the war in the northern Pacific Ocean until August 1865.

7) U.S. President Andrew Johnson declared the war officially over in the summer of 1866.
