Civil War historian Rick Britton talks about what was happening in Virginia–during the Civil War–150 years ago this week. The big news, of course, was that Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865, 150 years ago yesterday. Many Americans mistakenly call the April 9 surrender “the end of the Civil War.” It was not. It was merely the end of the war in Virginia. The Civil War went on for several months.
Civil War historian Rick Britton will be taking a bus group to Appomattox Court House (and the nearby Sailor’s Creek Battlefield) on Tuesday, April 28. To sign up call the Senior Center Travel Office at (434) 974-6538 or go to seniorcenterinc.org.
