Hospice of the Piedmont and The Senior Center will host The Death Cafe, Sunday, September 13, from 2-4 p.m. at the Senior Center, 1180 Pepsi Place, Charlottesville. The event is free and open to the community.

At a Death Café, people—often strangers—gather in small groups to eat sweets, drink coffee, and discuss death. The main objective is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives. A Death Café is a group-directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes, and no products or services are sold or endorsed. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counseling session.

Why talk about death? Death is a normal part of life, not a failure to be avoided or hidden. Not talking about it can lead to unnecessary pain and suffering for the living and the dying: we can’t plan; we can’t prepare; we can’t express our thoughts, feelings, fears. See http://deathcafe.com for more detailed information.

If you’d like to attend, please RSVP by calling 434-974-7756 or email margaret@seniorcenterinc.org by Sept. 10.
