Lori Wood, Preventions Services Director at Region Ten, joins Eric Seitz to talk about signed legislation that will extend the amount of time a person can be held in custody due to mental health concerns — 12 hours — when psychiatric inpatient beds can’t be located. Previously, the law required a person be released after six hours. The law will also require state hospitals to accept individuals under temporary detention orders when private beds are unavailable.
Lori will share whether this legislative step is enough help from “the system” or if more must be done. She will also share what we can do, as a society, to help our mentally ill youth or perhaps aide them before they become homeless, imprisoned or hospitalized for life.
