Dr. Joan A. Friedman

Dr. Joan Friedman joins Les Sinclair to talk about twins and how they are the same but different.

1 out of very 4 births due to IVF treatments will be twins.  How parents and society raise and treat twins, either as a “twinship” or as individuals, makes a big difference as twins try to seek independence from one another and build separate friendships, careers, and romance.

Adulthood can be an especially tough transition for twins.  As kids, twins are often expected to depend on each other for all their emotional needs.  As twins mature, many find it difficult to create a healthy adult “twinship” while learning to face life as singletons.

In THE SAME BUT DIFFERENT: How Twins Can Live, Love, and Learn to Be Individuals (Rocky Pines Press, 2014), Dr. Joan A. Friedman, a twin, the mother of twins, and an author and psychotherapist specializing in twin issues, describes the unique challenges twins face when trying to establish independent lives as adults.  A follow-up to her 2008 book, Emotionally Healthy Twins: A New Philosophy for Parenting Two Unique Children, she offers insights on and solutions to the challenges that arise when young adult twins seek independence from one another to build their separate friendships, career, and romance while still trying to maintain a healthy twin relationship.

Written to help twins, their families, and significant others interested in understanding more about the intricacies of adult twin relationships, THE SAME BUT DIFFERENT:

* Instructs twins how to have an honest and authentic relationship

* Explains why twins may feel disappointed about friendships that do not match the twin connection

* Teaches twins how to work through their guilt about wanting more space

* Discusses why some twins are afraid they might never love anyone else as much as they love their  twin

* Reveals how influential twin connections are in the choice of a spouse, a profession, and a place to live

* Offers tips and strategies to navigate through the issues of separation, individuality, and codependence

* Provides insight and understanding to families and significant others coping with twin struggles
