As the US FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization for convalescent plasma as a COVID-19 treatment. Les Sinclair speaks with Scott Heysell, MD, an infectious disease expert at UVA Health about convalescent plasma. UVA Health has been conducting a clinical trial evaluating convalescent plasma as a potential treatment for COVID-19. The approach infuses hospitalized patients with purified blood plasma taken from people who have recovered from the disease. The hope is that the antibodies contained in the plasma will boost the patients’ immune systems and help them recover.
