African American Teaching Fellows Dinner | Tamara Dias

This Friday evening is the eighth annual John E. Baker Legacy Dinner at Farmington Country Club. This is the primary fund-raiser for the African American Teaching Fellows, which provides scholarships and professional development programs for prospective teachers of color who agree to teach in either city or county schools.
A long-standing issue for both school divisions is faculty diversity. While our teacher ratios are in the neighborhood of 18:1, the ratio for teachers of color to students is 122:1. As revealed in the latest SOL and on-time graduation rates from the state, there remain gaps between the academic performance of all students and those of students of color. Increasing teachers of color in the classroom can help to make a difference.
