The Burley Varsity Club, an organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of the former Burley High School, which was the African American High School in Charlottesville from 1951-1969, during a time of segregation. The group organized in 2007, and has completed multiple projects to honor the legacy of the school. The Burley Bears set a record with an undefeated football season in 1956, and are regarded as one of the great high school programs in the history of the state of Virginia. Now the group is embarking on a project to build a monument wall at what is now Burley Middle School, to continue the mission of honoring the legacy of the former high school. Donald Byars, Jimmy Hollins, and Rauzelle Smith joined WINA’s Best Seat in the House to discuss the project. For more information email Rauzelle Smith at: rauzelle7@gmail.com, checks to support the project can be mailed to: P.O. Box 4746 Charlottesville, VA 22905.
