So after 4 games Virginia finds themselves in a familiar position of being 2-2, having played 3 of their first 4 games against ranked opponents, one of two teams in the country to do so. The other is ECU which has beaten Virginia Tech, and dropped 70 points on North Carolina. The loss to BYU can best be described by “missed opportunities”. Going into the game, Virginia was leading the country in turnovers, however they did not force a take away against BYU, and committed two turnovers. Mike London feels the Cavaliers had chances to keep their trend of forcing turnovers against the Cougars. “ That has been a signature of the defense the way they have played, now the ball was out a couple of times, we didn’t have an opportunity to get to it. There’s a fine line to winning close games against good teams like that you have to be on the plus side of that and we weren’t on Saturday.” BYU Coach Bronco Mendenhal told WINA’s “The Best Seat In The House” that holding on to the football would be the key, and he was proven right on Saturday. This statistic jumps out at you especially given the fact that UVA won the time of possession 40 minutes to 20 minutes, had over 530 yards of offense and ran a school record 102 plays, but did not force a turnover. UVA also suffered an injury at quarterback, Greyson Lambert left the game in the second half with an apparent ankle injury. Coach London informed the media yesterday that Greyson was in a walking boot, but was confident in his other options. “It benefits us that Matt Johns has been in college football games, it benefits us that David Watford has been in college football games so the position where we are at and what we’re asking our guys to do offensively, how our quarterbacks operate, both of them can handle that as well. So we’ll see what happens with Greyson but if not, like any other position it’s the next man up mentality.” Aren’t we all glad that Matt Johns is a capable back up? Not only did he come in and throw for 139 yards and a touchdown, he and Lambert have combined for 937 yards, and 6 TD’s in four games as a tandem. Ahmad Hawkins, former UVA standout and WINA Virginia Football Analyst compared the two to Phil Sims and Jeff Hostetler who played for the Giants in the early 1990’s. Ironically, they wore numbers 11 and 15 as well. By the way, Lambert had a career high in passing before he got hurt, so Virginia is hitting its stride offensively, and this time the defense, did not have a typical game for them giving up a couple of big passing plays. One of the reasons for this could be that typically with the pressure Virginia’s front seven produces, the secondary hasn’t had to cover very long because the opposing quarterback is usually under duress. However against BYU, the protection was excellent, and BYU quarterback Tasom Hill proved through his mobility, he is a handful to deal with, extending plays and running on UVA’s defense. However, there is no need to panic, UVA did sack Hill three times, and is still near the top of the nation with 3.5 sacks per game. Now the defensive secondary will have to prove themselves once again against a mobile quarterback for the Kent State Golden Flashes in Colin Reardon. Finding the right option at cornerback between Dreyquan Hoskey and Tim Harris will be a priority for this team with Maurice Canady locking down the other side of the field, he has only been targeted 8 times this season. So there is work to do for Mike Lonon’s team, as they prepare for a winless Kent State team that will have two weeks to prepare for the Cavaliers. Mike London certainly is not taking the game for granted: “ They’re a team that’s hungry for a victory…you can never overlook teams that want to taste success, and we want to taste it as well.” Coverage of Virginia and Kent State begins at 1pm Saturday on 1070 WINA and live online at wina.com.
