Oscar Smith star lineman Andrew Brown joined a prestigious list Wednesday when he was named Gatorade National Football Player of the Year.

Brown, a senior who has committed to Virginia, became the first South Hampton Roads player to win the honor, and only two Virginians have won the national award: Hampton’s Ronald Curry (1998) and Tabb’s Terry Kirby (1989).

A surprise trophy presentation was planned for Wednesday at Oscar Smith. Among those slated to attend was former University of Virginia and New York Giants running back Tiki Barber.

Brown this season has helped lead unbeaten Oscar Smith to Saturday’s Group 6A state championship game against Centreville at 4 p.m. at U.Va. Brown has 93 tackles, 18 sacks and six fumble recoveries.

Brown last week was named the Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year and was the All-Conference 2 Co-Player of the Year.
